What can I expect during my first massage therapy session?
A health intake will be completed with each client prior to their first appointment. This discussion is an important part of the massage, as it helps the therapist know which areas need to be focused on, if there are any health conditions that need to be addressed, and to determine whether massage therapy is appropriate for you. Depending on the goals set out by the client and therapist, certain assessments and testing may be done to help evaluate the best way to proceed with the massage. It is important to be honest with your massage therapist and to make them aware of all health concerns and medications being used so that any appropriate adaptations can be made to avoid doing any harm. It is also important to make your therapist aware of all allergies you have in case they need to change the lotion or oil to avoid an allergic reaction.
Do I need to be naked during my massage?
You should undress to the level that you are comfortable with. Some people prefer to undress completely, which is completely fine- professional draping techniques are ALWAYS utilized and only the area being worked on will be uncovered. There are also clients who prefer to keep their underwear on during the session, this is also okay. Your massage therapist will be able to make adjustments to work around any clothing left on. The ultimate goal is to make sure that each client feels safe and comfortable in the space. If removing all of your clothes makes you feel uncomfortable, it diminishes the effectiveness of the session immediately if you are stressed about that. So please, undress to your own comfort level and know that your therapist should be able to accommodate that for you.
Privacy is always provided while the client is undressing and getting onto the massage table. Your therapist will leave the room and provide enough time for you to get onto the table and get comfortable. They will always knock before reentering the room.
What do I do during my massage?
Make yourself comfortable. If your therapist needs to adjust your position, they will move you or instruct you to do so. Some people choose to close their eyes and allow themselves to completely disconnect and relax while others prefer to talk during their session. The session is yours and the therapist will follow your lead. Do not hesitate to speak up with any concerns, or to ask questions at any point.
Do I have to listen to “spa music” during my massage?
No, not if you prefer not to! While most therapists will default to more quiet, slower paced ‘new age’ music, you can absolutely request to have a different genre, or even no music playing at all. Studies suggest that playing music with less than 60 beats-per-minute has a calming and relaxing effect on the body, enhancing the overall experience. However, if spa music makes your skin crawl, and you prefer country, rock, rap, pop, etc,. speak to your therapist to discuss your options! If you listen to it at home and find it relaxing and enjoying, why wouldn’t it work for a massage as well, right!? I utilize an advertisement free streaming service with a variety of music options. I’ve also had people request to listen to their favorite podcasts, or to have no music with the windows open to hear the city sounds- your session, your choice (within reason)!
